How is God My Inheritance? Finding Faithfulness When Everything Else Fails

Kate Brooks

When life feels overwhelming and darkness seems to stretch endlessly, it can be nearly impossible to see the goodness and faithfulness of God. Yet there are moments—often found in deep reflection and honest questioning—when we catch glimpses of His eternal love and begin to understand that His mercies are indeed new every morning. One question often rises to the surface in these moments: How is God my inheritance? This question is important for those of us whose earthly inheritance is diminished by living with a body that does not work as it ought.

The Question We Must Ask

Asking how God is our inheritance is not a question to be answered quickly or superficially. Rather, it is an invitation to examine what we truly value, what we truly trust, and where we are placing our ultimate hope.

God's love is different from any other love. He will never fail us. It can be easy to know these things of God, but it can be so hard to feel them with all that we have gone through and are going through.

It's wonderful when God makes His goodness, mercy, love and faithfulness abundantly clear through our circumstances. But often, these good things must be searched for rather than quickly noticed around us. His goodness and love are already there in our lives through what Christ has done for us, and that sacrificial work of Christ must be the lens through which we view our trouble. Mercy doesn't always equal physical relief and faithfulness doesn’t always look like rescue, no matter how much we wish it did.

In the darkness we can feel so much pain and discouragement. The sun, however, will come out and shine again. Our heavy hearts will lighten as the light of Christ shines into every corner, nook, and cranny. The darkness of night won't last forever. Soon there will only be the light of day for eternity. Hold on! Christ will lead you out of that darkness into His marvelous light.

Even the smallest of things count as a mercy from the Lord. Are we looking for them? God can use us as a mercy to others. Show His kindness and love.

Holding Fast to God as Our Inheritance

As we navigate our own seasons of pain and uncertainty, we return to the foundational question: How is God my inheritance? This is the anchor that holds us steady when everything else shifts and fails. God's faithfulness is not dependent on our circumstances or our feelings in any given moment. When we claim Him as our inheritance—our greatest treasure, our ultimate security—we begin to see His hand at work in the story of our lives, in the big moments and the small mercies alike. His light has shone before, and it will shine again.

May we look back and see God's faithfulness as we look over the story of our lives. And may we see His faithfulness now, even today. Whether you're in a season of darkness or beginning to glimpse the light of dawn, know that His mercies are new every morning. When you can claim God Himself as your inheritance, you possess everything you truly need. Hold on. Christ will lead you out of the darkness into His marvelous light. You need not walk this journey alone.
